BITE YOUR TONGUESPAN>

Lyrics

Liner Notes

You have the right to speak your mind
That don't make it right to be unkind
They're only words, but sharp like knives
Hate has been heard to destroy lives

Bite your tongue before you let it lash out
Bite your tongue don't let it strike out loud
Bite your tongue before it's all said and done

You're taking chances with words you say
Making advances you'll regret one day
You choose your side against them all
Swallow your pride before you fall

Bite your tongue before you let it lash out
Bite your tongue don't let it strike out loud
Bite your tongue before it's all said and done

You'll know no peace with threats and lies
But you can know peace with compromise

Bite your tongue

BEHIND THE MUSIC:

I wrote this song in August of 2021 as part of a songwriting challenge based on including the phrase 'taking chances.' I still have trouble defining what genre this song is. It really kinda' miracled out of nowhere. The lyrics started from a discussion I was having with my wife when I said "just because they have the right to say whatever they want, doesn't mean that it's right to say whatever they want." I wrote this song my son's nylon string acoustic (I believe playing different instruments inspires new songwriting opportunities). Around the time I was writing this, artist/photographer Holly Shoemaker was assembling a photo exhibition that featured people with a single demeaning slandarous word on their faces and upper torso. Each person picked the phrase that impacted them. I asked her if I could use the photos in the video for this song since it really resonated with the lyrics I had written. And not only did she say yes, but she also included me in the exhibition!
