General Sherman At Sequoia National Park
by Mark Greenawalt

General Sherman Sequoia tree is the largest living organism on earth.

My neice, Dr. Kelli Mills, graduated from the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program at Midwestern University and it was time for a road trip when her parents and fiance came to Arizona for her graduation. So we packed up and headed to California to see the largest living organism on planet Earth - the Sequoia tree known as General Sherman. We ended up staying in a cabin in Kings Canyon and got to see several other awesome sights including Moro Rock and General Grant tree before heading to San Francisco for a couple of days. We crossed the Golden Gate Bridge to go see the even taller Redwood trees in Muir Woods and then visited the sea lions at Pier 38 before having lunch at Bubba Gumps! Congratulations Dr. Mills! It was great having you in Arizona while you worked on your degree!

Award of Distiction At The IES Phoenix Illumination Awards

IES Phoenix Illumination Award of Distinction and Merit for Eastmark Monument and Roosevelt Water Feature. IES Phoenix Illumination Award of Distinction and Merit for Eastmark Monument and Roosevelt Water Feature.

The 2024 IES Phoenix Section Illumination Awards ceremony was held at The Gladly in Phoenix. It was well attended and seven projects were recognized at the event. I'm proud to announce that the lighting that I did for the Eastmark Monument in Mesa took home the Phoenix Section Award of Distinction. In the picture above, you can see that there are 116 triangular cutouts in the 15' corten steel wall that are all independently programmed to any color under the sun and the seven stages (plinths) are wrapped with color changing LED lights also. Another one of my projects that won an Award of Merit was the Roosevelt Water Feature which is at The Grand at Papago Park. This project is truly a hidden gem that few people have seen yet, but it is just off the 202 freeway at the Priest exit in Tempe. It was a good year!

FAA Pilots License - Certified To Fly Drones Commercially
by Mark Greenawalt

Commercial drone license from Part 107 test from FAA unmanned aircraft exam.

I've had my DJI Air 2S for quite a while, but I'll admit that I hardly ever fly it. I took the European exam when I was going to Athens and became certified to fly in Europe...but then chickened out of trying to fly it when I was there. Now I have passed the Part 107 exam with the FAA to be a commercial pilot in the US for unmanned aircraft! So now I need to get some practice in and learn to fly it better and take better aerial photography and video. I suppose my main goal is to get some epic landscape shots and some architectural shots of my lighting projects, but I am hoping to also get some interesting photoshoots with models too. Historically I have been more drawn to still photography, but I have been building a portfolio of video things lately, mostly for the intent of creating content for my upcoming music videos. The sky is the limit...actually 400' is the limit, but who's counting!
