Halestorm and The Pretty Reckless
by Mark Greenawalt

Lzzy Hale of Halestorm live in Phoenix 2022. Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless live in Phoenix 2022.

This was the second time I had the opportunity to see Halestorm and once again Lzzy was unbelievably incredible. But for me, this show centered around Taylor Momsen and The Pretty Reckless. I was an instant fan when I heard the song "Going To Hell" and then became a super fan when I saw the music video. Since then I've listened to all of their albums and waited through the pandemic for them to go on-tour again. She didn't disappoint, except for the fact that it was a pretty short set. Opening band The Warning was also a surprise in a good way. Very young sister trio from Mexico and they were so good! Lilith Czar also opened before that, but I don't think I got a good read on her since I was completely unfamiliar with the songs. I wrote a full review and gathered a bunch of concert photography shots over on the Burning Hot Events page and I also took a little bit of video and posted to YouTube. Here are the links:

Sing Out Your Song - A One-Man-Band Music Video
by Mark Greenawalt

Mark Greenawalt jamming out on his vintage Fender Rhodes Mark I Stage 73 Electric Piano on the original song Sing Out Your Song

I wrote this song while sitting at my piano, but I didn't record it right away. I was waiting for the time to be right I guess. I had planned to hire someone on Fiverr to do the whistling (since I never learned to whistle). But I did hope to one day be able to whistle this tune myself so I started practicing. Lo and behold, I didn't get great yet, but I was at least able to do the whistle track myself. Also new for me is playing the clarinet. Luckily, it's a bit similar to playing saxophone and flute so I was able to at least play this little piece in the middle of this song.

The final element that came together was buying back my Fender Rhodes that I sold over 2 decades ago. I had intended the song to be a piano song, but when I played in on my Rhodes, it was almost like I knew why the time wasn't right to record it before now. While doing the studio recording of each instrument, I set up my iPhone on a tripod to do a video of each take. So this video shows the performance of the final takes in the studio. Lawn Pass For Summer Concert Series
by Mark Greenawalt

LiveNation Lawn Pass for Ak-Chin Pavilion summer concert series 2022 Tommy Shaw of Styx on tour 2022 at Ak-Chin Pavilion

Lori and I bought a Lawn Pass for the entire summer concert series at Ak-Chin Pavilion. They were a great value at $199 plus some fees that made it around $240, but we've definitely gotten our money's worth from some great shows. Highlights so far included Plush at UFest (Lori missed this one), Steely Dan, Chicago, Backstreet Boys, Styx/REO Speedwagon/Loverboy, Train/Jewel/Blues Traveler, and Incubus/Sublime. Another fun time was taking Sage, Savannah, and the grandkids along to see the Encanto Disney movie sing-along. We missed a few on purpose (Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa) and missed some due to weather or availability (Tears For Fears and Halsey), and a few we stuck around for a while, but left early (Thomas Rhett and Odesza). Still some cool concerts coming up like Stevie Nicks and The Who (who were added after we bought the tickets), Sammy Hagar, Alice In Chains, The Hu/Megadeth/Five Finger Death Punch, Pitbull, Slipknot, Black Keys, Wu Tang Clan, Shinedown, and OneRepublic is hopefully being rescheduled. It's been fun and I'm seriously considering doing it again next year!
